Legislation Reaches Alarming Levels
Assemblyman Fred W. Thiele

Yesterday, the State Legislature passed the tenth emergency budget extender submitted by Governor Paterson since New York’s spending plan was due on April 1.

Enacting the Governor’s Budget proposals through emergency extender legislation has now reached alarming levels. I cannot support these types of cuts to essential services like health care and to our local hospitals. This sets a bad precedent, and is something I cannot continue to support.

The 2010-11 State Budget is 68 days late and the Legislature needs to focus its efforts on developing, debating and voting on a real spending plan. This week-to-week piecemeal approach is causing more financial harm than good.

Instead of passing another budget extender, the Assembly and Senate should do their job and pass the actual budget.

CUTS TO LOCAL HOSPITALS UNDER BUDGET EXTENDER

Brookhaven Hospital - $1,330,642
Eastern Long Island Hospital - $141,783
Peconic Bay Medical Center - $235,147
Southampton Hospital - $223,767
Stony Brook Medical Center - $1,501,631
